Recycle Your Empty Cans

One of the things I'd really like to change at home is the quantity of rubbish we create weekly.

Our two big offenders are plastic bottles (milk) and cans (my better half can't be without his fizzy). So I thought I'd have a little browse around the net and find some creative re-use of our rubbish starting with cans.

Here are my favourite finds in no paryicular order:

1) http://www.memakingdo.com/2010/06/soda-can-hair-clip.html

Get your kitchen scissors out and make decorations for hair accessories. This one can be adapted for brooches, earrings, pendants, keyrings etc. just watch your fingers on those sharp edges, I recommend a bit of sanding on the edges to avoid blood splurts.

2) http://thesecretyumiverse.wonderhowto.com/how-to/8-refreshing-ways-recycle-empty-soda-cans-into-cool-new-things-0147464/

A bunch of interesting ideas here. My fave being the little camping stove.

3) http://spoonful.com/crafts/tin-can-knitting

This one uses food cans rather than drink cans but what a great idea!

4) http://littlehouseinthesuburbs.com/2008/12/aluminum-can-ornaments.html

A variation on the hair accesories, these beautiful leaves can be used for all sorts of things.

5) http://quidnunc.org/tab_belt.html

I've seen lots of creative jewellery pieces made from the tabs but this belt is my favourite.

6) http://www.thegreenestdollar.com/2009/11/cool-at-home-project-soda-pop-can-bracelets/

This is something I've already experimented with before coming across this blog. I havent quite perfected it yet - how to deal with the sharp edges and how to stop the very soft metal from distorting when you're wearing it - but I think there's a lot of potential for funky bangles. I've used soda can bangles as a base for polymer clay to great effect and I'm currently experimenting with embossing the metal with my beloved big shot.

There's lots more ideas out there but I should be doing housework or at least get out of bed. I've got big problems sleeping at the moment (short version -nostrils too small) so it's a miracle I'm using this child-free time to give my blog some loving rather than snoozing!

Laters folks xxx
